The Perth Reds Volleyball Association and Reds Volleyball Club are excited to announce the signing of former Australian Olympic Head Coach Jon Uriarte as General Manager – Pathways & Performance and Head Coach of the Reds VC State League Men.
The roles will see Jon have oversight of the Luke Perry Volleyball Academy (LPVA), working closely with aspiring indoor volleyball athletes, while spearheading the Reds campaign in the Western Australian Volleyball League (WAVL) State League, and working closely with athletes and coaches across the Reds VC and Reds Junior VC WAVL programs.
Jon is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most successful indoor volleyball coaches, having qualified and led Australia at two Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 and London in 2012. Jon also led the Argentina National Team from 2006 to 2008 and has coached professionally in Italy, Brazil and Argentina in some of the world’s biggest leagues.
Uriarte represented Argentina at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Olympics where he won a Bronze Medal, and also represented Argentina across four World Championships, playing as a Middle Blocker. Uriarte’s playing experience extends internationally competing professionally for eight seasons in Italy, France, Netherlands and is a three-time Argentine League Champion.
Jon’s coaching and sport development experience saw him launch the first full-time Junior Development Program at the Australian Institute of Sport, where he worked closely with developing players in their transition to becoming professional athletes and representing Australia. Jon was also integral in the coaching and development of his son, Nicolas Uriarte, a setter, who has represented Argentina at the 2012 London Olympics and competed professionally in South America and Europe.
Perth Reds Volleyball Association and Reds Volleyball Club President, Anthony Meo, said that Jon’s return to Australia and appointment at Reds was a landmark moment in Australian volleyball.
“Jon’s appointment is a huge boost for volleyball in Australia. Jon has a proven track record of developing high-performing athletes and teams across the world. His knowledge, experience and passion for the game will bring incredible benefit to our community here in Perth,” Meo said.
“Jon will create incredible opportunities for athletes and coaches in Western Australia to share the court with one of this country’s most highly credentialed coaches, providing a platform for volleyballers to reach their potential.
“Jon is passionate about developing the future stars of Australian volleyball and with upcoming Olympic cycles fast approaching, there is an amazing opportunity that presents itself for athletes and coaches to work with Jon in his team,” Meo said.
Jon is looking forward to hitting the court and beginning in his new roles.
“My former experience, working in Australia, across two Olympic cycles in Athens and London, was a beautiful experience and we achieved so many incredible things for the sport in this country,” Uriarte said.
“I feel so excited and privileged to come back to coach in Australia,” Uriarte said.
“In this new chapter of Aussie volleyball, I can’t wait to be a part of the Western Australian volleyball community, and this makes my wife and I so happy. I look forward to begin working with passionate and energetic players and coaches who share in my love for the game, so we can help take the sport in Australia to new heights,” Uriarte added.
Uriarte will commence in his roles in January and will be hitting the court when the Reds WAVL program gets underway in January.
