WAVL State League athletes to play free of charge at Reds!

WAVL State League and State League Reserves athletes will represent Reds Volleyball Club free of charge in a groundbreaking move targeted at better supporting the Club’s most senior athletes.

The change, announced by the Reds Volleyball Club Committee, will see Western Australian Volleyball League (WAVL) State League athletes not pay a cent to Reds, nor be required to complete any club service hours, to represent the Club in the competition, with all training and match fees, uniform, apparel and Reds WAVL Awards Night costs to be fully subsidised as part of the move.

Former Reds State League athlete and Head Coach, now Perth Reds Board Member, Joshua Court said that the announcement was a significant step in creating a more professional and higher quality environment for athletes to thrive in.

“Athletes who have reached the pinnacle of indoor competition in Western Australia deserve better,” Court said.

“Compared with the State League competitions of other sporting codes where athletes are paid to play in a large number of leagues, the financial strain placed on State League athletes in volleyball is significant and the decision taken by the Reds Volleyball Club Committee is a very exciting move for our sport,” Court added.

Reds will become the first WAVL State League club to introduce such a system and Reds Volleyball Club President Anthony Meo said that the change was targeted at creating a more affordable pathway for athletes to continue playing the sport at the most senior levels.

“It is well known across the volleyball community that the cost of playing our sport drastically increases as players progress from junior competitions to the most senior grades of the sport and this must change,” Meo said.

“The financial pressures on individuals and families to pay for interstate tours, local indoor and beach competitions as well as various other volleyball activities is skyrocketing. At Reds we are moving to a model where our most talented athletes and role models in our community will be better financially supported so that they can best contribute to our program,” Meo said.

“This move will save each player over $1,000 and that is something as a Club we are incredibly proud to be able to deliver,” Meo added.

Reds Volleyball Club has also announced a freeze on WAVL Divisions and Western Australian Volleyball Junior League (WAVJL) membership fees, with increases to the overall membership costs, if any, to move in line with increases in competition fees set out by Volleyball WA. Information regarding WAVL Divisions will be released by the Club in the near future.
